Cooking with The Syrian Sunflower

“When you share food, you share love”. Majeda, a Syrian chef and founder of The Syrian Sunflower company, will be demonstrating how to make two traditional Syrian recipes–Harraq Esbao and Fattoush salad. Majeda will also share her own personal journey as a Syrian refugee to help raise awareness of the Syrian humanitarian crisis, and the ongoing struggles of refugee communities.

Feel free to watch or cook along with Majeda as she makes:

1. Harrak Esbao – a traditional Vegan Damask dish of lentils, pasta, tamarind, coriander and garlic, decorated with fried bread & onions and pomegranate seeds.

2. Fatoush Salad - a colorful vegetable selection with an apple vinegar, pomegranate molasses, sumac and olive oil dressing.

Get ready for the workshop with all the ingredients!

Syrian Sunflower

I came to the UK at the end of 2017, after escaping political persecution for my human rights work in Syria. Away from home without family and friends, I found comfort in feeding people I lived with. For me, cooking was a way to promote Syria and integrate into society.
I am now on a mission to use my cooking, through classes and catering as I started my own business (The Syrian Sunflower company) a year ago, but also to raise awareness of the Syrian humanitarian crisis.

Food has always been at the heart of my humanitarian work. I was imprisoned in 2015 for helping to feed displaced people arriving in my city from other parts of Syria, I used to smuggle bread to the besieged arias to feed people even though this threatened my life. I couldn’t watch them starve.

Food is one of the ways I express my feelings to others. When you share food, you really share love. You ask others to open their hearts and minds. The connection of the dishes also celebrate the rich heritage of Syrian culture and there is so much to learn.
